YouTube to fight conspiracy theory videos by showing users Wikipedia links

YouTube has encountered multiple incidents where fake news has circulated on their platform in recent months.

The decision comes ahead of the 2018 US midterm elections, a time when other social media sites are under scrutiny for potentially impacting political outcomes fueled by false information.

"We know there is a lot of work to do, but we're eager to provide a better experience to users who come to YouTube every day to learn more about what is happening in the world from a diversity of sources", YouTube said in a statement on its official blog.

"Journalists often write articles first to break the news rather than produce videos".

Google-owned YouTube Monday announced a new commitment of 20 million US dollars to making authoritative news to counter false online information spreading on its platform, especially at the time of breaking-news events.

YouTube said it would expand its support team for news publishers, and provide additional sources and context on breaking news.

The company is establishing a working group with global news organizations, including Vox Media, Jovem Pan and India Today, to improve news production on the platform.

To verify legitimate news sources, a new fact-check box will be available on certain videos starting Monday for users to see accurate information. Part of that money will go toward helping news organizations build video operations.

In addition, YouTube presented a series of new features on its website to help users avoid hoaxes.

This will appear at the top of the search results and will include a reminder that breaking news can rapidly change. These two new features are now available in 17 countries including the USA, U.K., France, Italy, Japan, India, Mexico, Brazil, South Africa, Nigeria, and more.

Other topics that are targets of misinformation peddlers - like the moon landing, for instance - will see an increase in related links to sources like Wikipedia and Encyclopedia Britannia.

And together with Google, YouTube has teamed up with the Poynter Institute, Stanford University, Local Media Association, and the National Association for Media Literacy Education to support MediaWise, a US-based initiative created to equip one million teens with digital literacy skills.

YouTube content creators, including John Green, Ingrid Nilsen and Mark Watson, will be working with MediaWise to bring awareness to digital literacy and help educate with teens.
