Trump pledges July 9 announcement on Supreme Court nominee

It's been less than a week since Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement from the Supreme Court, but already anti-women activists are plotting how best to take advantage of a weakened judicial branch in order to undermine access to safe abortions.

Republicans changed Senate rules a year ago to get Trump's conservative nominee Neil Gorsuch confirmed, lowering the threshold to advance Supreme Court nominations to a simple majority vote.

Like many religious conservatives in a position to know, the Liberty University president with close ties to the White House suspects that the Supreme Court vacancy President Donald Trump fills in the coming months will ultimately lead to the reversal of the landmark abortion case Roe v. Wade.

The other senator who met with Trump, Republican Charles Grassley, is chairman of the Judiciary Committee, which will consider any Trump choice. The exit of Kennedy, often a swing vote in 5-4 decisions, gives Trump the opportunity to nominate a strict conservative and move the court farther to the right.

About the only thing one could say for certain about the eventual nominee was that he or she would be young (the median age of the reported five finalists is 48) and that their resumes show all to be without question conservative.

Collins, who favors a woman's right to choose on abortion, joined like-minded Republican Lisa Murkowski at the White House meeting. When it comes to the Supreme Court fight, that list is quickly culled to just three for one reason: they are the only Democrats who voted to confirm Gorsuch in 2017 - Indiana Sen. Gun rights or restrictions were the most-cited issue, followed by health care, then civil rights.

With Kennedy's departure, Republicans have a chance to tip the balance of the court.

White House Counsel Don McGahn will be Trump's lead adviser on the pick, having successfully guided the nomination of Justice Neil Gorsuch through the selection and confirmation process past year, White House sources said.

The Democrats - Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Joe Donnelly of IN and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota - are running for re-election IN November IN states Trump won IN 2016.

"I like them all", Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One. "I'm going to try and do something like that, but I don't think I'm going to be so specific".

"There is a high level of confidence within the community that overturning Roe is actually, finally possible", Moore said.

"The fact that there's a modest enthusiasm disadvantage isn't all that meaningful because there's already an enthusiasm gap for Republicans", he said, noting Democratic anger towards Trump.
