The Twitter "purge" is underway, and not even the biggest accounts, from President Donald Trump to President Barack Obama, can escape without losing a healthy chunk of their followers.

"Most people will see a change of four followers or fewer; others with larger follower counts will experience a more significant drop", Vijaya Gadde, who heads up Twitter's Legal, Policy, Trust and Safety department, wrote in a blog post discussing the purge.

The most notable changes in follower counts will be visible in the "next few days", it said but added that follower counts may continue to change more regularly as part of its ongoing work to "proactively identify and challenge problematic accounts".

Jemo Munuhe, who lost threem, said: "Fake it till you make it on these Twitter streets".

Compared to what some media outlets are reporting other major worldwide political figures lost, Canadian politicians fared relatively well, with most of the top-followed accounts losing between 3,000 and 1,000 followers.

Unilever was among the major companies that threatened in February to pull advertising from social-media services, including Twitter, because of a rise in hate speech, abusive content and fake news.

By cracking down on fake accounts, Twitter hopes to restore faith in the controversy-ridden platform where influence-from entertainment to politics-can be inflated by automated or fake followers, the New York Times reports.

Pakistani celebrity Twitter users with massive followers also experienced the same decrease.

By Thursday, Twitter had slashed tens of millions of accounts with suspicious behaviour, but the social media giant did not provide an exact figure.

While eliminating locked accounts from follower totals will not affect MAU or DAU totals, Twitter's efforts to shut down other kinds of accounts - including those set up by spammers - potentially could, Gadde acknowledged. Mr. Gandhi's account, @RahulGandhi, lost over 13,000 followers from 72.23 lakh on Thursday to 72.21 lakh on Friday.

It's always been an open secret that numerous Twitter users rely on bogus accounts and bots to inflate their follower count.

If your account has been locked during Twitter's purge, it will remain in the same state unless the owner validates the account and resets the password.
