Tropical storm Chris is third named storm of 2018 Hurricane season

Tropical storm Beryl is expected to move near to or pass south of the U.S. Virgin Islands on Monday, the National Hurricane Center (N.H.C.) said its in 5:00 a.m. advisory on Sunday.

Tropical Storm Chris has formed in the Atlantic, the third named storm of the 2018 hurricane season.

"Swells generated by Chris are expected to increase and affect portions of the coasts of North Carolina and the mid-Atlantic states into early next week", the advisory said, adding that some of the resulting conditions could be life-threatening.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said Sunday that the storm has barely moved since Saturday.

While the storm was not expected to make landfall as of Sunday afternoon, it will bring "life threatening" rough surf and risky rip currents along the East Coast, the weather service said.

High surf and risky rip currents are expected along parts of the Carolina and mid-Atlantic coasts through early week.

Off the U.S. East Coast, Tropical Storm Chris had maximum sustained winds of 60 miles per hour (95 kph) late Sunday. A tropical storm watch is in effect for Barbados, Martinique, St. Martin, St. Barthelemy, Saba, St. Eustatius and St. Maarten.

Elsewhere in the tropical Atlantic, Beryl - once a hurricane - has weakened substantially on approach to the Lesser Antilles.

Tropical storm watches were in effect for Barbados, St. Lucia and Dominica.

The storm was traveling west-northwest at 26 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds of 45 miles per hour, meteorologists said Sunday evening.

Tropical Storm Beryl is moving rapidly westward toward the Lesser Antilles at the eastern entrance of the Caribbean Sea.

N.H.C. said this morning that interests elsewhere in the Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic should monitor the progress of Beryl.

In the Caribbean, a tropical storm warning was up on Guadeloupe and Dominica and long lines were reported at grocery stores on several islands as people shopped for food and water.

Puerto Rico, which was devastated by Hurricane Maria in September, remains under a state of emergency.
