Syrian air defenses thwart Israeli missile strike near Golan Heights

Russian Federation was already working to distance Iranian forces from Syrian areas near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and had proposed that they be kept 80km away, but this fell short of Israel's demand for a full exit, the official said.

Netanyahu underlined warm ties between Russian Federation and Israel, emphasizing what he described as their key stabilizing role for the Mideast.

Israel has warned Iran, which is allied with the Syrian government, against building up a military presence on its doorstep.

In recent days, Israel has noted the serious refugee problem created by the Syrian regime's routing of areas in southern Syria near the border with Jordan.

Russia, another top key ally of Assad, has warned it would be unrealistic to expect Iran to fully withdraw from the country. Its air force has struck scores of targets it describes as Iranian deployments or arms transfers to Lebanon's Iran-backed Hezbollah.

He added that civilians in Raqqa city still die because of the ammunition and the mines left there due to the intensive shelling by warplanes of the "international coalition".

Netanyahu called the meeting "substantive", noting the importance of preventing misunderstandings before they occur rather than afterward.

Asked who would win the match, Netanyahu told them, "the better team".

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Russian Federation on Wednesday that Israel would not seek to topple Syrian President Bashar al-Assad but that Moscow, his key ally, should encourage Iranian forces to quit Syria, a senior Israeli official said.

However, the army did not clarify whether the unmanned aerial vehicle was intercepted over the Golan Heights, which Israel occupied during the 1967 war with Syria. "In that context, we rely on peaceful diplomatic means to resolve any differences and expect both sides to show restraint".
