Starbucks Will Eliminate Plastic Straws Globally by 2020

Vancouver will be the first Canadian city to have the new lids, starting in the fall of this year.

The changes will help Starbucks (SBUX) eliminate more than 1 billion plastic straws per year, the company said.

Starbucks announced on Monday it plans to eliminate plastic straws from its 28,000 stores worldwide by 2020.

The strawless lid is available in more than 8,000 stores in the US and Canada for drinks such as nitro cold brew and cold foam cold brew coffee.

The decision came after the company worked to design a new lid for the Draft Nitro cold foam beverage in 2016 that was originally served only in Seattle, according to a release from Starbucks.

McDonald's also recently said it would switch to paper straws in the United Kingdom and Ireland by next year, and test alternatives to plastic straws in some USA locations. Seattle's ban on plastic straws and utensils went into effect last week.

However, customers who prefer or need a straw can still request one, but they will be made of alternative materials.

The mega coffee brand announced that it is slowly getting rid of plastic straws, and will serve iced drinks using a plastic lid with a teardrop-shaped opening in an effort to reduce waste and become more environmentally friendly. Malibu, Calif., Miami Beach, Fla., and Monmouth Beach, N.J., also prohibit single-use sippers.

Other communities across the country, including Sanibel Island, located in Florida, are also on the list of places considering a ban on these plastic products.

The move echoes a trend of companies and cities attempting to move away from single-use plastic straws, which can be detrimental to the environment and take an estimated 450 years to decompose. "I hope all of you will listen to her". Starbucks said it has committed more than $10 million to this initiative so far.

Starbucks stock closed at $48.98, up 37 cents or 0.76%, on Friday.
