Some valsartan medicines recalled amid impurity concerns

The valsartan was supplied by Zhejiang Huahai Pharmaceuticals.

The drugs, made with the active ingredient valsartan, were found to contain N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), a chemical that's been classified as a probable human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

According to Health Canada recommendations, patients that take that drug should talk with their pharmacists to know if their medicine was recalled.

In a release on July 9, Health Canada identified a list of 28 products containing the ingredient valsartan that are being recalled by their manufacturers.

Explaining how the NDMA may have been introduced into the active substance, the EMA suggested it was likely to have been introduced due to changes in the way the ingredient was manufactured. As a precaution, the review will also consider whether other valsartan medicines may be affected.

Valsartan is used to treat hypertension and can prevent cardiovascular complications associated with the condition.

The agency also said that everyone that takes medication which contains valsartan should continue taking it unless their doctor or pharmacist tells them to stop.

EMA and United Kingdom regulators are working together to investigate the extent of the issues and any possible impact for patients.

"An investigation into other potentially impacted products is now being undertaken and further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses", the MHRA said.

Health Canada said it is monitoring the product recalls, and advises anyone using an affected product to contact their health-care practitioner as soon as possible to discuss treatment options.
