Samsung phones are sending photos to random contacts without permission

Reports from Samsungphone users emerged, stating that pictures have been sent from their phones to seemingly random contacts, without their permission. The problem turned up on Reddit, spotted by Gizmodo, and then found its way to Samsung's official forums. The mostly likely cause for the problem is a recent update to Samsung Messages, the default texting app for Samsung phones. "My phone's battery was super low overnight so maximum power saving had kicked in from a routine I set with Good Lock, and two or three people had been sent photos (just one each, and they were photos I had sent them in the past)".

T-Mobile, one of the carriers that have implemented RCS, says "It's not a T-Mobile issue", and is referring users back to Samsung. He also added that he has never used the Shared tab in Samsung Gallery app, which lets users send photos through messaging apps, email or social media without leaving their photo gallery.

Users theorize the issue has something to do with the recent Rich Communication Services (RCS) update, which rolled out on American mobile carriers like T-Mobile. However, T-Mobile told Gizmodo that it's not a T-Mobile issue. Errors included scheduled text messages ending up in the wrong threads. This is exactly what some Samsung devices are doing as reported by a number of different users online.

Further complaints were posted to the Samsung Community page, all relating to a new protocol that rolled out earlier this year to Android devices to boost messaging capabilities.

In a statement, the company said: "We are aware of the reports regarding this matter and our technical teams are looking into it".

There are now two fixes if you are anxious about the issue affecting your device.

For now, Samsung smartphone users are advised to revoke storage access permission from Messages through the device's app settings until the bug can be patched up.
