Riyad Mahrez unconcerned by Manchester City competition: 'I never thought about that'

The club record fee does not faze the 27-year-old and Guardiola proved a determining factor in his decision to leave Leicester City.

Maguire has built on an impressive season for the Foxes with a series of equally eye-catching displays at the World Cup for England.

Asked if he was anxious about the challenge of getting into the City side, Mahrez said: "No, I never thought about that".

The Algeria forward completed a club-record £60million switch to the Etihad Stadium earlier this week.

There's always been a sense that Mourinho has been unhappy with United's backline (and life in general, for that matter), and the report adds that Maguire's arrival could finally spell the end of the road for Chris Smalling or Phil Jones.

Mahrez, though, said he did not wish to discuss the frustrations of the January transfer window and rather set his sights on what he can achieve at Manchester City.

Maguire has enjoyed a meteoric rise since coming through the youth ranks at Sheffield United as he made his name during a three-year spell at Hull City before making a £17m move to Leicester in 2017 where he's continued to enhance his reputation as one of the best defenders in the Premier League. The Champions League is for big clubs and Manchester City are a big club.

Such was City's dominance last season that Mahrez thinks, by the second half of the campaign, they had mentally already beaten some teams before games even kicked off.

"After what they've done it's fantastic", Mahrez, 27, told a news conference. I wanted to work under him and to play in this club.

He said: "They have everything to try to win the Champions League".

"I think he has more quality and can be a bigger player than I was, but we need to see how far he can push himself. This does not affect me", said Mahrez, who only cost Leicester £400,000 when they signed him in 2014. "It's a good thing".

"I'm confident I can help the team", Mahrez said. It is a goal.

'Since the day he came to Leicester, the season he had last season as well, it doesn't surprise me to see him succeeding at the World Cup.

The Premier League outfit have been linked with a number of replacements in the form of City's Patrick Roberts and Lyon's Bertrand Traore, however Tuttosport have claimed they are now looking at Falque as a solution to their problems.
