London awaits Trump's visit, braces for protests

The US president arrived at London Stansted Airport shortly before 14:00 on Thursday, and is due to meet Prime Minister Theresa May and the Queen over the next two days.

Melania's diary suggests that while Mr Trump is expected to avoid protests with visits outside of the capital on Friday, she will be in London for the first part of the day.

Rarely has a foreign leader been so mocked on an official visit - London's mayor, a Muslim who has challenged Mr. Trump's world view - okayed the balloon, which is an apt symbol of Mr. Trump's tempestuous relationship with Britain, traditionally the United States' closest ally.

On Friday, demonstrators are expected to gather near Chequers, the Prime Minister's country residence, where May and Trump will hold a working lunch.

A giant balloon depicting Donald Trump as a baby will not be allowed to fly over his Turnberry golf course, police have said.

The U.S. Embassy in London alerted American citizens there to "exercise caution" and "keep a low profile". The president's Scots heritage is well known, and I hope he enjoys his visit to Scotland'.

Mr Mundell said he is looking forward to welcoming the president.

"I think that's why Brexit happened", he said, noting that Britain was "a pretty hot spot right now with a lot of resignations".

"I think they like me in the UK".

"So that was the full planning that went into it - 10 pints of stout and, you know, late-night conversation."

Fresh from a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit where Trump chided Germany and other European nations for failing to contribute enough to defence spending, British Prime Minister Theresa May is hoping his trip will boost the close ties between their two nations and help forge a future free trade deal.

They will attend a black-tie dinner with Theresa May, before meeting the Queen in Windsor on Friday.

Mr Smyth, who is originally from Ireland, said Trump fans had been given a bad rap, and there had been lots of support for the pub's temporary renaming.

The state visit has never been scheduled - there is fierce opposition to it in many quarters of Britain - and this trip is part of a working visit instead, meaning, among other things, that Trump will overnight at Winfield House, the US ambassador's handsome residence near Regents Park rather than in Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle as a guest of the queen. But she also warned Trump not to ignore the "malign behaviour" of Moscow when he meets Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki next week.
