Liverpool open Xherdan Shaqiri transfer negotiations with Stoke City

Now 26 years old, Shaqiri still has bags of potential and playing for a club of Liverpool's quality could help him unlock that.

Stoke are resigned to losing the Switzerland worldwide, who understandably wants to stay in the Premier League after last season's relegation into the Championship.

The Echo reports that Shaqiri would prefer a move to Liverpool and Stoke are hopeful that selling the Swiss global to the Reds would mean they would be more willing to loan out one of Harry Wilson and Sheyi Ojo.

Jurgen Klopp has identified the Switzerland global as one who can bolster his attacking options, while the presence of a release clause in the 26-year-old's contract makes a deal a financially attractive one.

However, despite his career falling off track somewhat at Stoke, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp clearly believes the 74-time Swiss worldwide can perform at the highest level and aims to bring him to Anfield this summer.

Klopp's side reached the Champions League final last season but finished a distant 25 points behind record breaking champions Manchester City.

They were thought to have been close to completing a move for Lyon's Nabil Fekir, only for the move to collapse at the eleventh hour. Fekir, in any case, is still with France at the World Cup and would not be due to return to action until early-August. It's pretty normal to be aware of clubs being interested.
