Light’s insane multi-lens camera system coming to a smartphone

Camera company Light is developing a smartphone that could have up to nine camera lenses. For those who do not know the brand, Light is a for-profit company focused on revolutionizing the photo industry. That's the case with the L16, a digital camera with -wait for it- no less than 16 lenses, coming from Light, a company we haven't heard from in a while. The L16 is nothing to turn one's nose up at dismissively.

Light already has a camera called L16 with a 16 lens system, placed at various angles. The multiple lenses work simultaneously to capture an image, each at a different focal length. According to the Washington Post, Light is working to bring its multiple-lens technology to smartphones. Light's 9-camera phone prototype may also have a hefty price tag when it releases. As for what the smartphone will cost is anyone's guess at this point, since it's still in development. The L16 camera also has other features, such as portrait mode effects and 5x optical zoom. But today, with smartphones like the Huawei P20 Pro (pictured at the top of this article) sporting three lenses working together to create high-quality images, it seems much less insane.

It's not clear whether Light aspires to be the next big smartphone company, or if it's simply betting that its notional multi-camera smartphone's unique selling proposition lures enough customers to make a profit. This smartphone is said to be packaged not much thicker than the iPhone X. We don't have that many details as of yet, but we have emailed Light to find out more. Tech Crunch has stated that they have reached out to Light for more information, though no news has been returned as of yet.
