Kawhi Leonard Rumors: NBA Executive Expects Spurs To Trade Disgruntled Star

Kawhi Leonard Rumors: NBA Executive Expects Spurs To Trade Disgruntled Star

Are the Sixers willing to give Spurs' sky-high asking price for Kawhi Leonard?

All three of these stellar small forwards had the chance to come team up with the East's up-and-comers, help bear the fruit of the Process, and have their name live in Philadelphia 76ers sports history.

The Leonard-Spurs saga has seemingly lingered for months now.

San Antonio might favor such a deal because it allow them to send Leonard out of the Western Conference and prevent the forward from creating a potential super-team with the Los Angeles Lakers. The trade talks between the Spurs and Sixers have hit a snag, however, because the Spurs reportedly "keep trying to raise the ante".

The Toronto Raptors also generated buzz as a potential destination for Leonard.

Bontemps adds that with LeBron James now out of the Eastern Conference after signing with the Los Angeles Lakers, Raptors president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri might be willing to swing for the fences and move all-stars DeMar DeRozan or Kyle Lowry in such a deal to acquire Leonard. He was clearly a favorite for the team and years later, he could be in the mix yet again. Part of the reason why teams could be hesitant to offer the motherlode for Leonard is that he is entering the final year of his contract and may amount to a one-year rental player for teams.

Leonard appeared in just nine games last season due to a right quad injury that limited him to just over 23 minutes and 16 points per game. Even if it costs the Raptors a draft pick and a young asset, moving, say, DeMar DeRozan in a package for Leonard would give Toronto a cleaner cap sheet when nearly all of their meaningful contracts come off of the books in 2020. The Sixers are confident that they can sway him to pick up his player option or re-sign with them via free agency next summer.
