Jubilant Croatia fans revel in World Cup semi-final win over England

Ivan Perisic tied the score in the 68th minute.

Croatia were a goal down against Denmark in the last 16 and against Russian Federation in the quarter-finals, before equalising and forcing extra time and penalty shootouts.

But instead of flagging, they seemed to gain in energy and avoided a third shootout when Mandzukic struck with a well-taken low shot in the 109th minute.

England and Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge informed his followers he does not want to see any negativity after the defeat as the squad have "made everyone proud" this month in Russian Federation.

With their own bitter memories of past semi-final defeats in the soccer tournament, England and Croatia will be competing for a spot in Sunday's final against France.

"Until they scored [the equaliser] we were always under cosh", Kane said.

"We believed in its potential, and I think the games that we've prepared for, we had belief we would win, but there is still pressure in all of those matches, so I'm really pleased with how the team have emerged and developed". "God willing, we will be world champions".

England had been the ones hoping to make history, in what was their first appearance in the semi-finals in 28 years.

Trippier's free-kick was not only his maiden England goal but was his first goal of any kind since he scored for Tottenham against Watford on February 6, 2016 - 886 days ago.

With England on the front foot, Raheem Sterling nearly latched onto a pass from Jordan Henderson but Croatia goalkeeper Danijel Subasic raced out to claim the ball.

Keane was also critical of England skipper Harry Kane, as he suggested the Spurs striker looked off the pace as he laboured through most of the second half and extra time. Croatia didn't have similar expectations, but their failure to get out of the group stages since 1998- disappointing for a team which has had Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic over the past decade.

Perisic almost scored a second goal just minutes later, as he latched onto the ball following a defensive lapse before striking the post with his shot.

It was a different game from then on, with Croatia suddenly playing with accuracy and goal as England lost its shape and composure, though Kane missed a chance to win it in stoppage time when he headed wide from a free kick.

Perisic came close again and Mandzukic had a shot saved by Pickford as Croatia pressed for the victor but it wasn't to come and the game headed into extra-time.

"This is a miracle. We wanted to give the fans a final, but we have to dust ourselves down and go again in a couple of years".

Harry Kane's penalty against Colombia took England's tally to nine and goals from Harry Maguire and Dele Alli in Saturday's quarter-final win against Sweden saw them emulate Sir Alf Ramsey's famous squad. "There's a lot we could have done better".

The game had started so well for the Three Lions.

"We've come an incredible long way in a short space of time". But Kane said the team could "hold our heads held high" as they "went further than anybody thought". "So tonight we weren't quite there, but the team will be stronger for that".
