Johns Hopkins Hospital buildings evacuated after 'inadvertent' tuberculosis release

Earlier today, a small sample of frozen tuberculosis that was being used for research purposes was inadvertently released in a non-patient area.

Two cancer research buildings on Jefferson Street were evacuated as Baltimore City fire crews assessed those who may have been exposed.

The all-clear has been given on the Johns Hopkins campus after a hazmat scare Thursday after a small tube with a frozen sample of tuberculosis was dropped and the lid came off. The hospital staffs said that a tiny quantity of the germ accidentally released into its facilities during transportation.

"In fact, we have determined that there is actually no risk, meaning zero risk, to anybody involved", King said. "We want to thank our employees for their quick response to the situation as well as the Baltimore City Fire Department".

"So far, all indications are that no other individuals have been exposed; however, the buildings will remain evacuated until cleared by public safety officials", Hoppe said. In the year 2016, only nine thousand two hundred seventy-two cases of TB were reported, which is regarded to be the lowest count recorded till today. The bacteria usually attack the lungs, but TB bacteria can attack any part of the body such as the kidney, spine, and brain.

Symptoms include coughing up blood, fever, chills, night sweats, shortness of breath, chest pains, weight loss and fatigue. Because of its knack for picking on the immunocompromised, TB is much more risky and occasionally fatal for people who also have HIV.

According to the Mayo Clinic, tuberculosis infections was once rare in developed countries but began increasing in 1985, but cases in the United States began to decrease again in 1993 due to stronger control programs. It can be fatal if it goes untreated.
