‘Hunter becomes the hunted’: Lions eat poachers on South Africa reserve

Earlier this week, a pride of lions at the Sibuya Game Reserve in South Africa ate two to three poachers who broke into the park to hunt rhinos.

The hunters were torn to shreds by the big cats at the Sibuya Game Reserve in Kenton-on-Sea, South Africa, where staffers discovered bloodied body parts, including a head and limbs Tuesday, the Daily Express reported.

A May 2018 "60 Minutes" report revealed that they are being slaughtered at the shocking rate of three a day at the hands of poachers like the group killed in Sibuya.

"As it was already dark, it was not possible to investigate the area until first light, at which time we arranged for our vet to dart the entire pride of lions so that police forensic teams assisted by our anti-poaching unit could comb the immediate area for clues", he explained. The dog heard something and attempted to alert its handler, who brushed it off as the usual sound lions make.

"We're not sure how many there were there's not much left of them".

Rhinoceroses are valued for their horns, which are falsely thought to have medicinal and aphrodisiacal properties in some cultures and are also used to create works of art. Officials had to tranquilize six lions so they could obtain the remains and items on the scene, police told BBC.

Nature's justice: At least three poachers are believed to have been eaten by lions at the Sibuya Game Reserve.

Poachers have broken into the popular 30-square-mile reserve in the Eastern Cape before.

"They [found] an ax and high-powered rifle with a silencer, which is a surefire sign of rhino poachers", Fox said.

This year alone, nine rhinos - all shot with a high-calibre hunting rifle - were killed by poachers on Eastern Cape reserves.Last week, Bella, a rhino at the Kragga Kamma Game Park, was killed just a week after she was dehorned. "At this stage, we're unable to speculate as to how the remains ended up at the scene".

In 2016, the reserve lost three rhinos when poachers got into the park and shot them dead and cut off their horns.

Police have not identified the slain humans, and they're testing the rifle to determine whether they were poachers.
