The GLOW series on Netflix earned an Emmy award nomination for outstanding comedy series.

However, there were a number of others who were nominated for the first time for longer-running shows.

The show about noble families vying for the Iron Throne faces a tough challenge from perennial favorite comedy sketch show "Saturday Night Live" and HBO stablemate "Westworld" with 21 nominations each. Although it's up for top series honours, it drew only three supporting actor bids for cast members Lena Headey, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Peter Dinklage. Saturday Night Live's Colin Jost and Michael Che will host the ceremony.

Game of Thrones' roared back onto the Emmy battlefield, topping Thursday's nominations with 22 bids but facing a formidable opponent in 'The Handmaid's Tale, ' last year's top drama series. Atlanta leads in comedy series nominations with 16, and RuPaul's Drag Race and The Voice each had 10 nominations to lead in the reality-competition category.

FX's true crime drama The Assassination of Gianni Versace led the limited series category with 18 nominations, including Best Limited Series, Best Actor (Darren Criss), Best Supporting Actor for Ricky Martin, Edgar Ramirez and Finn Wittrock, and Best Supporting Actress for Penelope Cruz and Judith Light.

Betty Gilpin was the only performer to score a nom for a first-year series, scoring supporting comedy actress for "GLOW". It was not in the running in 2017.
