Dive expert calls Thai rescue

Doctors and nurses at a triage camp set up just inside the mouth of the cave gave the boys quick physicals before they were sent to a hospital in Chiang Rai.

The mission to free the remaining members of the group has been suspended for at least 10 hours, Chiang Rai Governor Narongsak Osotthanakorn said, as teams replenish supplies used up removing the first four boys. The entire journey is about 4km long and requires the boys - some of whom can't swim - to dive underwater and pull themselves through the narrow tunnel using a rope. Mr Narongsak would not say which of the boys were rescued. The search and rescue operation has involved dozens of worldwide experts and rescuers, including a USA military team.

Confirmation of the initial rescue was posted on the Thai Navy SEAL official Facebook page late Sunday evening, several hours ahead of the initial schedule provided by authorities.

The governor explained that a re-evaluation of the boys' situation had led the rescue authorities to conclude that they could not stay in the cave throughout the monsoon season.

But the survival of those remaining in the cave is far from guaranteed with extraction efforts put on hold until Monday morning to allow rescue divers time to resupply.

As of Monday morning, eight boys and their coach remained in the cave where they have been trapped by floods since June 23.

Narongsak said the operation on Monday went more smoothly than on Sunday and took two hours less, adding, "We think tomorrow we will do better than today and will succeed 100 percent".

"We all clapped and cheered", he said.

The boys' nightmare experience - trapped in claustrophobic darkness by rising waters - resonated across the globe, riveting people both in Thailand and internationally who anxiously watched the news coming from this town along the border with Myanmar.

The Guardian reported that the four boys who were rescued last night are in good overall health and should be able to see their families later today, according to a key health official.

A second diver followed the pair through the cold water and airless chambers that have already claimed one life. Rescuers have been unable to extend a hose pumping oxygen all the way to where the boys are, but have brought them some oxygen tanks.

Expert divers have spent the past week training the boys in basic diving.

Rescue chief Narongsak Osottanakorn on Sunday said four of the team - affectionately dubbed by Thai social media Wild Boars 1,2,3,4 - were "safe" but released few details about their condition or identities.

Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, in an interview with CNN affiliate Nine News Australia Monday, said that the remainder of the boys were also expected to be extracted in batches. "We can't visit our boys in hospital because they need to be monitored for 48 hours", Somboon told Reuters.

"(The rescues) have raised the hopes of those watching this very closely, very nervously - and of course the relatives of those trapped".

Musk tweeted early Saturday that he was working with a team from his SpaceX rocket company to build a "tiny, kid-size submarine" to transport the children. "I'm so happy the children came out safely".

The soccer team's coach wrote to the parents of the group saying he promises to take care of them as best he could, thank you for all the support and I deeply apologize to the parents. "Finding the boys doesn't mean we've finished our mission".
