Chemical tank blast rocks Cairo, 12 hurt

Twelve people have been injured after an explosion at a chemical factory near Cairo's airport, Egypt's state news agency MENA says.

Pictures shared on social media appear to show a fireball rising into the air in the Heliopolis district.

The incident happened at about 10:30 p.m. local time on Thursday when an explosion was heard across the eastern part of the capital.

"Civil defence trucks were deployed to bring the fire under control", he added. The Civil Aviation Minister said air movement at Cairo airport wasunaffected after the blast, contradicting earlier unconfirmed reports.

The ministry's spokesperson affirmed that the flights at the airport were not at all affected by the explosion.

The cause of the detonation and fire at the fuel depot is unknown as of yet.

Various sources are claiming that the explosion was from a fuel tanker near the airport, indicating that the incident might be an accident rather than foul play.

There is no confirmation so far of any casualties.
