Astronomers Capture First Confirmed Picture of a Planet Being Born

A newborn planet has been observed for the first time by astronomers. Actually it's the first day.

The planet, dubbed PDS 70b, was detected by an global team using the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Chile and its planet-hunting instrument, called SPHERE. The footage in itself is incredible. It is located roughly three billion kilometres from the central star, roughly equivalent to the distance between Uranus and the Sun. The planet stands clearly out, visible as a bright point to the right of the center of the image, which is blacked out by the coronagraph mask used to block the blinding light of the central star. The surface of the planet has a temperature of about 1000 ° C and the study of its spectrum reveals the presence of a turbid atmosphere encircling it. PDS 70b creates a complete class once every 120 Earth years.

PDS 70b is a wee babe of a planet and astronomers believe it is likely still growing.

What do they know about the planet?

According to the news, the finding would not have been possible without SPHERE instrument, which uses the technology of high contrast imaging.

"These discs around young stars are the birthplaces of planets, but so far only a handful of observations have detected hints of the baby planet in them", Miriam Keppler, lead researcher from the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy.

This is a great discovery for those on Earth, which is 4.5 billion year old planet. The new discovery may be young, but it is huge: many times in Jupiter's shape, which can fit within 1,300 planets of the planet.

This cloudy planet is forming around a star called PDS 70, which lies about 370 light years from Earth.

The mystery of how planets are formed has boggled scientists for centuries, but newly captured photos of a fledgling planet nestled in the rings of a young dwarf star could be about to unlock the secrets of deep space. More studies are going on for analysing the circular disc around the baby planet.

"Keppler's results give us a new window onto the complex and poorly-understood early stages of planetary evolution", comments André Müller, leader of the second team to investigate the young planet.

In a monumental event, astronomers from the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Germany have snapped an image of a baby planet still in the process of formation.
