USA offers 'unique' guarantees to North Korea on eve of summit

Members of the U.S. delegation, including USA secretary of state Mike Pompeo, right, and John Bolton, national security adviser, left, and North Korean advisers watch a television screen showing the meeting. "I think it's gonna be really successful and I think we will have a terrific relationship I have no doubt".

At his news conference following the summit, Mr. Trump did not elaborate immediately on the agreement he had reached with Kim, but said North Korea was a nation with "tremendous potential and I think he understands that and I think he wants to do the right thing".

Basketball star and improbable North Korean envoy Dennis Rodman broke down in tears live on television Tuesday as he recounted the hostility he faced for meeting dictator Kim Jong Un.

Trump said over the weekend that he would know if Kim is serious about brokering peace within "a minute" of meeting him.

The new year began with another televised address from Kim, this time involving threats of a "nuclear button" on the North Korean leader's desk.

The report also said Mr Kim was accompanied by his foreign minister Ri Yong Ho, defence minister No Kwang Chol and sister Ms Kim Yo Jong.

Trump is sounding optimistic about his ability to persuade North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons program after a lengthy one-on-one meeting with leader Kim Jong Un.

The MFA also said Lee will meet President Trump separately on Monday.

"Well, it was not easy to get here", Kim said through an interpreter, before noting the two were able to overcome "obstacles" to start the summit.

During his stroll, crowds yelled out Kim's name and jostled to take pictures, and the North Korean leader posed for a selfie with Singapore officials.

Mr Trump said earlier the highly anticipated talks represent a "one-time shot" at peace.

Trump and Kim will meet at the Capella Hotel on Sentosa Island at 9 a.m. Tuesday (9 p.m. Monday ET).

Staff-level meetings between the United States and North Korea were going "well and quickly", Trump said in a message on Twitter on Tuesday.

"North Korea has previously confirmed to us its willingness to denuclearize, and we are eager to see if those words prove honest", Pompeo said.

"I'm asking every Democrat who wrote that letter and all my Republican colleagues to tell North Korea and China that if diplomacy fails, we will have the president's back, we'll authorize the use of military force as a last resort to stop the nuclear threat in North Korea to the American homeland and the world at-large".

But in return, Washington would offer "different and unique" guarantees "to provide them sufficient certainty that they can be comfortable that denuclearisation is not something that ends badly for them".
