USA, Canada and Mexico to host football World Cup 2026

The joint bid defeated Morocco's application with 134 of the 200 votes cast at the FIFA Congress in Moscow on Wednesday.

Venues for the 2026 World Cup, which is slated to be the first WC to feature 48 teams, will be chosen from 23 stadiums that now exist or are already under construction.

The joint North American bid was considered a heavy favorite from the outset and earned high marks from FIFA's bid evaluators because it will, in theory, require less construction and lower costs than the Moroccan bid, which carried an estimated price tag above $15 billion.

Herdman, who coached the women's national squad when Canada hosted the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2015, says "we were singing O Canada with 60,000 people, alongside everyone that was watching". "And when it's all said and done, I think the United Bid Committee and Federation Internationale de Football Association in 2020 will have a really hard time not putting our stadium on the list for matches".

Montreal, Edmonton, and Toronto are contenders for the games played in Canada, although it is not yet determined how many games each city will host. With M&T Bank Stadium's $120 million renovation set to be completed by next fall, city officials will have two years to address issues both technical and otherwise. When the idea of hosting 2026 World Cup training camps on the Island was first suggested last September, headmaster David Robertson said he would be interested in pursuing that hosting opportunities. Several foreign national teams also arranged games in the United States - including Spain against El Salvador in Washington, Japan against Costa Rica in Tampa, Ghana against South Korea in Miami and Portugal against Ireland in East Rutherford, N.J. - on their way to the final tournament in Brazil.

Portland was not chosen as one of the finalists to host World Cup matches. And then we've got an eye on the pathway, the infrastructure, the development system to make sure that the right players arrive at the right time in 2026. The North African country would have needed to invest billions of dollars to build new stadiums while the United States, Mexico and Canada will mostly use existing venues.

All that work helped pave the way for Wednesday's landslide victory, a resounding win for the United Bid and landmark moment for North American soccer.

USA, Canada and Mexico will host football's World Cup 2026 after it saw off a challenge from Morocco at the FIFA Congress.

The North American bid book published earlier this year proposed the 84,953-capacity MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, just outside New York City for the final.

Each U.S. city would host at least five matches. But short of scoring a political own goal, the biggest sporting event in the world should be headed to the Emerald City in eight years.

Eleven of the 23 stadiums under consideration for the North American bid now have artificial turf, including Montreal's Olympic Stadium and Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium, both of which were used in the 2015 Women's World Cup.
