US President Trump arrives in Singapore for historic Trump-Kim summit

North Korea has faced years of economic sanctions over its nuclear and missile programs since it conducted its first nuclear test in 2006.

He said if diplomacy fails to move in the right direction, the sanctions "will increase".

Kim and Trump arrived in Singapore hours apart on Sunday for their much-anticipated meeting Tuesday to discuss the regime's nuclear arsenal.

Trump was hosted for a working lunch Monday by Singapore's prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong, at the Istana, which is the official residence of the city state's president.

Kim remained ensconced in the heavily guarded St Regis Hotel, where he is staying.

He smiled and waved to excited crowds and was accompanied by Singapore's foreign minister, who tweeted a selfie standing next to him.

Singapore is reportedly footing the bill for the summit-which will run close to $20 million-and will pay for North Korea's travel expenses.

The U.S. president will then address the media before flying out late Tuesday Singapore time. Others complained about the traffic jams in downtown Singapore.

"I think that I brought awareness to a lot of things around the world and I think North Korea has given a lot of people the opportunity to do this conference now and I hope it's a success", Rodman told reporters.

Trump descended from Air Force One into the steamy Singapore night, greeting officials and declaring he felt "very good" before being whisked away to his hotel via a route lined with police and photo-snapping onlookers.

In March, Trump accepted on the spot an invitation by Kim to meet in person, without preconditions, setting the stage for Tuesday's historic event.

A successful summit could also herald momentous changes in the security landscape of northeast Asia, in a similar way to how the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 changed Europe.

Discussions would focus on "the issue of building a permanent and durable peace-keeping mechanism on the Korean peninsula, the issue of realising the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula and other issues of mutual concern", KCNA said.

The rare public appearance of Kim, waving and smiling to onlookers, adds to the more affable image of the young leader that has emerged since his summit in April with South Korean leader Moon Jae-in.

He has also convinced the North Korean people that nuclear weapons are their only savior from an invasion by the U.S. But Kim, who was educated in Switzerland, has also promised to transform North Korea's economy and the lives of its people.

"We will not be surprised by any scenario", said the official.

Later, they would be joined by their respective negotiating teams for discussions that could last another hour.

Both leaders are set to meet at Capella, which is on Sentosa, Singapore's resort island. The meeting was initially meant to rid North Korea of its nuclear weapons, but the talks have been portrayed by Trump in recent days more as a get-to-know-you session.
