The end of net neutrality is here

The recent FCC's staunch opposition to net neutrality has been met with waves of public backlash, at one point amounting to almost 22 million comments being submitted to the its website, as well as criticism from policy experts who say a repeal of the rules will let internet service providers give preferential treatment to some websites, including their own.

The agency said the regulations were unnecessary and unhelpful, but critics counter that internet service providers will now have too much control over the flow of online content. That tactic, which experts call "paid prioritization", runs the risk of creating an uneven playing field where big, dominant Internet companies can afford the fast lanes while start-ups or small businesses get left behind, net neutrality activists say.

Across the country, state officials have moved to keep net neutrality rules in place on their turf. We still don't and won't block, throttle or discriminate against lawful content. After an intense marketing and lobbying campaign, internet companies like Verizon, AT&T, and Comcast convinced the FCC to allow them to slow or restrict access to certain websites.

For now, broadband providers insist they won't do anything that would harm the "internet experience" for consumers.

In May, a bill was approved in the Senate to save net neutrality rules. Others, including the governors of Montana and NY, used executive orders to force net neutrality.

"Now, on June 11, these unnecessary and harmful Internet regulations will be repealed and the bipartisan, light-touch approach that served the online world well for almost 20 years will be restored", FCC Chairman Ajit Pai said in a statement Thursday.

What exactly is net neutrality?

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai, who voted in favor of repealing net neutrality, said on CBS This Morning the "Restoring Internet Freedom" rule will be "tremendously positive" for consumers.

Under the rules, internet service providers were required to treat all online content the same. As a result, the internet could become more like the TV networks, where you pay for different packages of internet services. Now Comcast Cable president Dave Watson posted a blog post today to reconfirm Comcast's "committed to an open internet".

However, companies are likely to drop these self-imposed restrictions; they will just wait until people aren't paying a lot of attention, said Marc Martin, a former FCC staffer who is now chairman of communications practice at the law firm Perkins Coie. The end of the rules comes as House Democrats are pressing for a resolution to reinstate them.

As for Congress, the Senate issued a vote to overturn the decision in May and the House of Representatives now has the opportunity to do the same. Several states, including New Jersey, Washington, Oregon and California, have gone so far as to push legislation to enforce the principles of net neutrality within their borders.
