But reasons for suicide are complex, and anyone can be at risk, regardless of social or socioeconomic status.

That's how much the overall suicide rate has increased in more than half of US states in that time, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Topping the list was North Dakota, where suicides have risen by 57 percent from 1999 levels. This week the authorities of USA health care told that there had been an intense rise in suicide rates all over the country, since the starting of the century and had called for a detailed approach to address against depression. "That gives a little correlational evidence to how it affected people already contemplating suicide". To see more, visit KCUR 89.3.

According to the Wall Street Journal, there are many factors that can trigger a person to commit suicide.

The CDC found that Montana had the highest rate for the last period studied (2014-2016), at 29.2 suicides per 100,000 residents, followed by Alaska (28.8), Wyoming (28.8), New Mexico (26.0), Utah (25.2), Idaho (24.7), Oklahoma (23.5), Colorado (23.2), Nevada (23.1), and South Dakota (22.6).

"Searches for precise suicide methods increased after the series' release", wrote the study's authors, while also noting that it was unclear whether an increase in searches equals an increase in actual suicide attempts (though there's typically a correlation between the two). "And they had to keep up appearances to protect and nourish their personal brands, their companies, and the people they loved".

So what is it about reports and even fictionalized depictions of suicide that can set off some individuals?

Thompson and Zinzow recently completed a grant to implement college suicide prevention research and programming funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. "So if someone [who took their own life] was married, had three kids, had these likes and these hobbies, somebody else can then put themselves in the narrative and say, 'That's my life'".

And Richardson says the rise of social media may feed the increase. David, who had had a troubled life but had made many positive changes, killed himself, leaving family and friends to mourn him, but none of the attention being given now to the latest celebrity suicides.

"It becomes voyeuristic", she says. Nationally, the average suicide rate is 12.93 per 100,000, and suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States, with almost 45,000 people taking their own lives each year. "If someone dies of cancer, we don't have to know what the person was wearing or what color their bedsheets were".

But, she said no matter the cause, there is hope.

"We often can be concerned about doing more damage by asking questions, but it is likely that you cannot do more damage", Grier said.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness recommends ways to prevent suicide and approach the topic with someone who is showing signs of suicidal thoughts. The answer: if you see something, say something.

"Be available", he says. Seek help if you, or someone you love, needs it. Make sure they give you their word that they will not take their life.

She suggested if you know someone with these thoughts, you or they can call the suicidal hotline or you can take them to the emergency room.
