Net Neutrality Ends Today - What’s Next?

A new set of rules at the Federal Communications Commission went into effect Monday, ending consumer protections that assure equal legal broadband access that doesn't slow or block certain sources. Originally put in place by the Obama-era FCC, the regulation prevents ISPs and wireless carriers in the USA from charging streaming content providers for a "fast lane" that would disseminate their media at a faster data speed and at a higher resolution than the competition.

In a statement, Schumer said that House Republicans could have prevented the regulations on internet service providers (ISPs) from being rolled back by taking up legislation that passed the Senate last month.

With the end of net neutrality, Broadband providers insist they won't do anything that harms the "internet experience" for consumers. Under a new plan, the Federal Trade Commission will police the ISPs.

Media captionWhat is net neutrality and how could it affect you? Before 2015 The FTC had control over regulating the internet and it was only for the three years that the FCC had control.

"Now, on June 11, these unnecessary and harmful internet regulations will be repealed and the bipartisan, light-touch approach that served the online world well for almost 20 years will be restored", Pai said in a statement last month.

The Republican-majority FCC voted along party lines in December to repeal the regulations, which expired today. Under the new guidelines, ISPs can block, throttle, or prioritize internet content as much as they like, as long as they clearly disclose to customers that that's what they're doing. "That idea sits at the foundation of internet services, reflects how consumers enjoy the internet today, and despite claims to the contrary, has never truly been in jeopardy". "Plain and simple, thanks to the FCC's rollback of Net Neutrality, Internet providers have the legal green light, the technical ability, and business incentive to discriminate and manipulate what we see, read, and learn online". If the House votes on and passes the bill before the end of this session, the measure would be sent to President Trump.

Pai was also interviewed on CBS and denied that ISPs are likely to violate net neutrality principles despite the past examples of Comcast throttling BitTorrent and AT&T blocking FaceTime. Many Democrats say the issue will help motivate younger people to vote in congressional elections this November, when all 435 seats in the House and a third of the 100-member Senate will be up for grabs. "But then in 2015, the FCC chose a different course".

More than 20 states have filed a lawsuit to stop the net neutrality repeal.
