Kyrie Irving not considering contract extension with Celtics

Kyrie Irving not considering contract extension with Celtics

Boston undoubtedly is mindful of Irving's impending payday, and if he plays at an elite level next season, the organization likely will be happy to open up its checkbook. But it's fair to put him down for a couple of deflections, and certainly his comments scored a few points with Celtic followers.

Irving made it clear, however, that management will not decide in a vacuum.

Wade, who won two National Basketball Association titles alongside James with the Miami Heat, pointed out how no matter which team he joins, they will likely always make the Finals and that it's a "lifestyle thing" at this point. He said he's not running on a treadmill yet, but mentioned he is participating in "running activities" on the basketball court. "The fact that we're even having those conversations and I'm a part of it, I'm thankful for".

After weeks of being "an outsider looking in", Irving said he's planning on dedicating this offseason to his craft and is taking everything one day at a time to ensure he will be ready for the start of training camp. "So we'll see what happens".

This is all popping up as Danny Ainge and the Celtics weigh their options with Irving. "Obviously, the speculation ... it's inevitable".

"Then you could try to trade Kyrie for someone like Damian Lillard or just trade Kyrie to Cleveland for LeBron".

For now, Irving says he is not considering a contract extension. And his injury history won't affect that concept. On July 10, 2014, Irving signed a five-year, $90.3 million max deal with Cleveland.

"For me, I don't think it's a basketball thing", Wade said, as quoted on NESN. "I'm doing my best to kind of deflect all that and focus on what's in front of us". "That's really the only thing I'm anxious about".

"If I'm Boston you could do a few things".

Boston acquired Irving in exchange for Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and a pair of draft picks.

"We're all competitors", he said. "For me, it's my job to just stay present".

Because the Celtics are over the cap, Irving can only sign for 120 percent of what he's making now, which is just over $20 million.

"For sure", he said. "I mean, they went to Game 7 of the frickin' Eastern Conference finals". For me, I'm just glad everyone got to learn how special they were on a bigger stage. I'd been talking about how great [the younger players] were. Some of their numbers particularly probably didn't look as appealing to the outside looker, but they were always locked in. They have experience, our young guys that sometimes other young guys in the league aren't necessarily afforded.

A lot of the news coming out of Boston hasn't been the best.

Once he is able to return, Irving, like many of his teammates, is expecting - and excited for - intense, competitive practices.

"It's encouraging", Irving told Robb of his time in Boston.

Irving was finally out of LeBron's shadow.
