Japan beats 10-man Colombia in another upset in Russia

Ten-man Colombia and Japan were level at 1-1 at halftime in their World Cup Group H match on Tuesday.

In an explosive start to the Group H clash, Colombia defender Carlos Sanchez earned the first red card of Russian Federation 2018 with a handball after just four minutes. Sanchez was given a red card in the third minute of the game as a result, and it was the right call by the head official.

Colombia coach Jose Pekerman made what appeared to be a tactical substitution by replacing attacking midfielder Juan Cuadrado with the more defensive Wilmar Barrios on the half hour.

Ospina was forced into a pair of saves after the restart, first going down to smother Osako's shot and then diving out fully to palm away an effort from Inui.

Ospina was called into action again moments later, diving full length to his left to push Takashi Inui's curling 20-yard shot away from danger, before Pekerman sent on James as he sought a way to turn the tide back in favour of his side.

The pressure told in the 73rd minute, as Osako headed in Keisuke Honda's corner.

The Colombians were a goal down and a man down after just five minutes in their opener. He almost single-handedly guided Colombia into the championship by scoring six goals in only five games. Also no James Rodrigez for the South American side. We will have all the latest updates and Video highlights from the game so don't go anywhere!

Los Cafeteros were hardly overrun in the second half, but as the game wore on Japan's numbers advantage started to show.

It is the sixth time Colombia have reached the World Cup having recorded their best finish in 2014 when they reached the quarter-finals. For the majority of the side, this could be their final World Cup appearance and will be looking to go out on a high.

Colombia's talisman has been ruled out of the match with a calf injury which has been bugging him for a weeks.
