How to get help for someone who might be suicidal

Suicide is now the second leading cause of death among people 15 to 34 years old.

Across the board in the USA, suicide rates were up 25.4 percent in that 17-year period.

The CDC report found that just over half of the suicide victims did not have a known mental health condition.

"Suicide is a leading cause of death for Americans - and it's a tragedy for families and communities across the country", said CDC Principal Deputy Director Dr. Anne Schuchat.

While mental health is often a factor, the CDC cautioned that there is no single reason for the almost 30 percent nationwide increase between 1999 and 2016, pointing to the finding that approximately half of those who died by suicide did not have a known mental health condition.

Resources in Kansas are available for suicide prevention and the promotion of behavioral health.

The CDC says there were a higher number of suicides in areas hard hit by the economic downturn, especially in rural areas in western states.

Researchers and advocacy groups who work to prevent suicide say the report shows that much more needs to be done to tackle this growing problem.

Prevention efforts are best done when "people can get help solving the underlying drivers of the problems causing them to feel hopeless and despair", Stuber said.

"It's on all of us to take more responsibility for our own health and the health of our loved ones, both physical and emotional", Dvoskin says.

Minnesota was one of the states with the biggest suicide-rate increases.

Haley Lillibridge, 25, answers the phone at CrisisLink, a suicide and crisis prevention hotline in Arlington, Virginia, on June 23, 2011.

Additionally, the report looked at the rates of emergency department visits for nonfatal self-harm, a major risk factor for suicide, which rose by 42 percent from 2001 to 2016.

Buhse said anyone anxious about a friend or loved one should check in on them and use a direct approach. It found that 54 percent of suicide victims did not have a known mental health condition.

When someone is at risk of committing suicide, he said, treat the situation as a "CPR intervention" and get help right away. "We don't really understand why there's such an increase", CBS News chief medical correspondent Dr. Jon LaPook said on "CBS This Morning".

Despite this, she said there are studies that show a rise in teen suicide during the time the series began streaming.

"A big problem that has not yet been addressed in practice is that we continue to rely nearly entirely on people themselves to proactively tell us if they are suicidal", said Matthew Nock, a professor of psychology at Harvard University.

Social isolation, lack of mental-health treatment, drug and alcohol abuse and gun ownership are among the factors that contribute to suicide.
