G7 leaders set to clash with Trump

The European Union on Monday backed Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau after US President Donald Trump branded him "dishonest" and "weak" following a Group of Seven summit of leaders.

- "Prime Minister Trudeau is being so indignant, bringing up the relationship that the USA and Canada had over the many years and all sorts of other things. but he doesn't bring up the fact that they charge us up to 300% on dairy - hurting our Farmers, killing our Agriculture!"

So US allies were much surprised when Trump suddenly began attacking Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for comments at a news conference and rescinded his support of the joint statement by the G7.

What did Trudeau and Trump say?

And Roland Paris, a former foreign policy adviser to Mr Trudeau, jabbed at Mr Trump on Twitter: "Big tough guy once he's back on his airplane".

The U.S. president is lashing out on several fronts. "We will stand by them and anyone who would depart from them... shows their incoherence and inconsistency".

The United States on Saturday signed a G-7 declaration calling for a reduction of tariffs and other barriers to trade, though President Donald Trump continued to lash out at traditionally close allies for allegedly treating unfairly on trade.

Trudeau had said Canadians "are polite, we're reasonable, but also we will not be pushed around".

May 31 - The Trump administration announces that Canada will no longer be exempt from steel and aluminum tariffs, prompting the Trudeau government to announce its own counter-measures.

The US President is also making threats against Canada's dairy producers and automakers.

The escalating clash over trade between Washington and some of its closest global partners, including Canada, came as Trump arrived in Singapore for a crucial summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.

Trump called Trudeau "dishonest & weak" after Trudeau said at a news conference that Canada would retaliate for new US tariffs.

"(Canada and the U.S.) have a great relationship and we've had it for 150 years and I think we'll have ups and downs like this", he said.

White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. "The phrase I've used is engage but beware", she told Britain's Sky News. He really kind of stabbed us in the back. "The Prime Minister said nothing he hasn't said before - both in public, and in private conversations with the president". The compromise on that issue resulted in language that said "free, fair, and mutually beneficial trade and investment, while creating reciprocal benefits, are key engines for growth and job creation". Hours ago, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo held a news conference in which he said Trump is prepared to offer North Korea unprecedented security assurances, although he did not specify what these guarantees would be.

He added: "That's what weak, dishonest Justin Trudeau did and that comes right from Air Force One".
