FG lauds outcome of Kim, Trump historic summit

Ending the drills "is in excess of all expert consensus, South Korean requests, and even a close reading of North Korean demands", said Adam Mount of the Federation of American Scientists. "Because this is the goal we have hoped for and have been working for". That marked a significant walk-back from previous statements by US officials, who had said they wanted a quick process and a significant show of good will from the North.

But no rational and objective observer who followed the summit and saw Trump and Kim behaving so cordially can believe that Trump is leading the US into a nuclear war with North Korea.

Kim has always insisted on a "phased and synchronous" - or "action-for-action" - approach to giving up his nuclear weapons.

The sanctions "need to stay in place until North Korea verifiably and irreversibly dismantles its nuclear arsenal", said Andrea Berger of the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey.

Trump, who starred on NBC's reality show "The Apprentice" before entering politics, told reporters he was "not concerned at all" that the film could be used as propaganda, adding, "We could use that video for other countries".

Trump has in the past condemned it as one of the world's most brutal governments.

Kim said that the "world will see a major change" and he and Trump "decided to leave the past behind" as they put pen to paper.

The other thing that they have said, Balbina Hwang, is that Chairman Kim is inviting President Trump to come to North Korea, and he accepted the president's invitation to come to Washington.

Kim did not appear nervous as he held the grip and nodded a few times during the greeting.

"I share president Trump's assessment of that when he thanked the leaders of Japan and South Korea and China for the solidarity they've shown".

The US president said he had, and did not retract his description of Mr Kim as "talented".

But that language wasn't mentioned in a joint declaration signed by Trump and Kim, and no timetable was set for North Korea to eventually give up nuclear weapons.

Trump was joined by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, White House Chief of Staff John Kelly and the notoriously hawkish national security adviser John Bolton.

"I really believe otherwise I wouldn't be doing this", Trump said of the summit. He first impressed with his historic meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in at the border village of Panmunjom in April.

The meeting, long sought by Pyongyang, will be the first ever between a serving U.S. president and a North Korean leader, and will focus on the nuclear bombs and ballistic missiles the North has spent decades developing.

"South Korea is a little confused".

Cheered on by crowds of onlookers, Kim toured the Marina Bay Sands, a three-tower complex with the replica of a cruise ship spanning across the 57th floors, strolled along the architecturally stunning Jubilee Bridge and took a selfie with Singapore's foreign minister.

"Kim may be honest about wanting to rejoin the community of nations and develop his country's economy".

Melissa Hanham of the US-based Center for Nonproliferation Studies said on Twitter that North Korea had "already promised to do this many times", adding the two sides "still don't agree on what "denuclearization" means".
