‘Depressing’: Merkel slams Trump’s ‘withdrawal in tweet’ following G7 summit fallout

The French president also said that neither he nor his partners in the G7 do not seek a confrontation with the U.S. and Donald Trump.

A photograph of world leaders from the Group of Seven nations with the most advanced economies surrounding Donald Trump, first shared on German Chancellor Angela Merkel's official Instagram account, went viral on social media over the weekend, inviting a flurry of jokes and multiple caption contests.

Concerned about Trump's approach to tariffs, Merkel on Friday proposed the creation of a "shared evaluation mechanism" on United States trade, a forum aimed at defusing tensions between the USA administration and the European Union.

Nevertheless, Germany would stick to the "legally-binding" declaration that was agreed at the end of the summit, she insisted.

Merkel said she first found out about Trump's decision on the flight back from Canada. Germany and the rest of the European Union will retaliate with tariffs on U.S. products imported into Europe as of July, she added.

"This has solidified my belief that we, Europeans, should decide our fate by ourselves", the German leader said, calling on EU to be more active in defending its values and principles.

Then we have these four angles.

"PM Justin Trudeau of Canada acted so meek and mild during our @G7 meetings only to give a news conference after I left saying that, "US Tariffs were kind of insulting" and he "will not be pushed around".

The leaders had been meeting at the Group of Seven summit in Quebec, Canada over the weekend.

He continued: "I have no doubt that the United States and Canada will remain firm friends and allies, whatever short-term disagreements may occur".

And he said Trump's determination to bait his allies over trade and diplomatic engagements "would only play into the hands of those who seek a new post-West order where liberal democracy and fundamental freedoms would cease to exist".

The German chancellor bemoaned that "Sometimes it seems that the American president thinks that only one side wins and everyone else loses", apparently referring to Trump's barbs directed against Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Trump plans to leave the summit four hours earlier than originally planned to fly to Singapore to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, the White House said.

"The prime minister said nothing he hasn't said before-both in public, and in private conversations with the president", Trudeau's office announced in a statement, according to Reuters.

The two leaders talked on the phone last week after Trump announced USA tariffs on European goods.

The other six nations are pushing for the G-7 to affirm "collective trade rules" in the communique, the French official said.

"We spent two days producing a statement and commitments", the statement said.
