Canada will host 2026 World Cup with US and Mexico

Federation Internationale de Football Association is scheduled to hold a vote to see if it will allow 48 teams to play in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

A North American joint bid won the rights Wednesday to host the 2026 edition of the celebrated soccer tournament, defeating Morocco and bouncing back from an unfathomable USA defeat to Qatar in voting for the 2022 event eight years ago.

Member associations voted Wednesday at the FIFA Congress in Moscow in favour of the North American bid over that of Morocco.

Morocco has largely avoided competing with the North Americans in a dash for cash.

The North American victory suggests football officials are ready to gather for a World Cup in a country whose government has demonstrated its willingness to jail corrupt sports leaders through undercover investigations.

The current blueprint calls for Canada and Mexico to stage 10 games each, with the U.S.to host 60. Canada has never hosted a men's World Cup but held the women's tournament in 2015. It will also be the first tournament to be hosted by three countries, Goal reported.

The vote by football federations was public, in contrast to secrecy surrounding the ballot by FIFA's elected board members for the 2018 and 2022 hosts, Russia and Qatar, in 2010.

Canada, Mexico, Morocco and the U.S. were exempt from voting, while Ghana was absent after the country's government said it had disbanded its football association amid allegations of widespread corruption.

US, Mexico and Canada to host 2026 World Cup as Morocco lose out

Ryan Gaydos is an editor for Fox News.

"This is a monumental victory for the Concacaf family, as the United Bid exemplified the strong collaboration, beyond politics and business, that now exists in our region".

"And today they betrayed us", Moroccan Olympic champion runner Hicham El Guerrouj, who was active with the bid team, told Reuters. Citing a number of high-profile sponsors dropping FIFA, London newspaper The Independent reported that FIFA's 2018 World Cup sponsorship revenues were down $240 million.

It marks the first time the World Cup will be held in more than one country since 2002, when South Korea and Japan shared hosting duties.

Mexico has twice hosted the World Cup, in 1970 and 1986.

"Thank you so, so very much for this incredible honor. However, it is important to note that both bids were deemed to have met the hosting requirements and a tournament in Morocco, close to Europe and in a country that loves football, had a great deal for English football fans to be excited about". One congress member voted for "neither bid". The North African country claimed 33 per cent of the vote. Canada narrowed its list to Montreal, Toronto and Edmonton.

Hasseltine said Monday that the focus of Baltimore's bid committee would now turn to tying up "any loose ends", from potential practice venues to the creation of green spaces in the city.

A US bid lost out in the vote eight years ago for the 2022 World Cup, which was handed to Qatar, and U.S Soccer Federation president Carlos Cordiero said it had been a long road to get the tournament back to the country. The United Bid is expecting to make more than half that in ticket revenue alone.
