Apple Bans Cryptocurrency Mining on iOS

Apple Bans Cryptocurrency Mining on iOS

After Google, Facebook, and Twitter, now it's time for Apple to join its Silicon Valley counterparts in restricting the crypto industry.

These are all new requirements that app developers need to be aware of that were not in the guidelines before. Wallet apps for crypto are fine, as long as the developer is enrolled as an organization.

The latter has five subsections that further describe what apps can and cannot do in terms of cryptocurrency. This makes sense as in last December, Apple accidentally listed a fake version of the widely-used MyEtherWallet app in the App Store.

To keep its hardware, think iPhones, from draining battery or computing power, Apple has now forbid app developers from including any 3 party advertisements that run cryptocurrency mining.

"Apps may not mine for cryptocurrencies unless the processing is performed off device (e.g. cloud-based mining)", Apple notes.

The ban applies for apps designed explicitly with mining operations in mind. On macOS, however, users will continue to be able to acquire apps outside of the Mac App Store, enabling mining and other activities to continue without Apple's seal of approval.

"Apps should not rapidly drain battery, generate excessive heat, or put unnecessary strain on device resources", the company stated in the paragraph banning cryptocurrency mining processes from running in the background.

Making its position clear " Purchasing and Currencies 11.17 Apps may facilitate transmission of approved virtual currencies provided that they do so in compliance with all state and federal laws for the territories in which the app functions". According to the rulebook, only official apps developed by the exchange itself can provide such services. These conditions extend to apps providing cryptocurrency futures trading, and other crypto-securities or quasi-securities trading. Apps also can not offer cryptocurrencies as a reward for performing certain tasks such as downloading certain apps, or posting messages on social media.
