Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said that India was committed to reduce 33 to 35 percent of the emissions intensity of its GDP by 2030.

This World Environment Day UN Environment is asking you, companies and civil society groups, to take a concrete action to Beat Plastic Pollution.

It is the duty of each one of us, to ensure that the quest for material prosperity does not compromise our environment, he added.

While noting that proper management of plastic waste, through the promotion of the three R's of waste management - "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" - should be adopted, the association also called for encouraging research into alternatives to plastics.

The Minister said plastic menace was not only an environmental issue, but also a major socio-economic development challenge and clearly among the tragedies of the 21st century.

"Within this period however, plastic has transformed everything from clothing, cooking, and catering to product design, engineering and retailing", due to its advantage of lasting for a long time, almost all the plastic ever produced, still exist in one form or the other today. Mr Modi mentioned that the per-capita plastic consumption in India is much lower than any part of the developed world.

Speaking at the state environment ministers' conference here, he said that an emotional attachment with the environment is imperative for its preservation.

Through the celebration of this day worldwide, the significance of preserving the environment is highlighted through various events, such as seminars, talks, television programmes and walks for environmental protection.

According to the Clean Seas campaign at least 8 million tonnes of plastic leaks into the ocean each year. "Most ends up in landfills, dumps or in the environment". He said, India is reducing its dependence on fossil fuels and it is switching sources of fuel where possible. India and several countries of the world have successfully formed the global solar alliance. About 4,500 eco-friendly biodegradable plastic bags, which decompose through living organisms, have been circulated since the launch of the initiative. Through a global volunteer network, we have till date planted 71 million trees in India and across the world.

"I am joining Rally for Rivers & United Nations to beat plastic pollution".
