Trumpist Media Ignores Struggle Over Net Neutrality

Still, Democrats are already using their messaging in campaign material.

Although the FCC exempted Internet service providers from many aspects of that tougher oversight, such as rate regulation, opponents of the rules said the decision opened the door to onerous federal regulation. Without those, telecom companies could quash competition and free speech on the Internet - a response consumer groups warn is increasingly likely as Netflix and other streaming services eat up the telecoms' bandwidth.

"It's typical of how Republicans have used their total control of Washington: Increase costs on Americans who actually work for a living while giving more breaks to the rich, well-connected special interests they care about".

Today, senators voted on a resolution to undo a 2017 move by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to end net neutrality regulations, but major television and print media outlets have devoted little more than a few mentions to the issue. "Net neutrality protected everyone. that era, the era of an open Internet, will unfortunately soon come to an end". That might just happen - it's an election year and Republicans will be lobbied by net neutrality supporters.

Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) and John Kennedy (La.) - joined the 49 Senate Democrats to pass the bill 52-47.

Net neutrality requires internet service providers (ISPs) like Comcast, AT&T, and Verizon to give their users equal access to all internet content. Upending these rules means that, for a fee, ISPs can prioritize certain websites, allowing them to load more quickly on their users' devices, and slow down or even block other sites. Using the Congressional Review Act, or CRA, senators were able to reverse the decision reached by the government agency.

As reported by the Guardian, Senator John Thune, a Republican from South Dakota labelled the Senate's vote as "political theatre", saying it stood no chance of approval by the House. Tech giants such as Google and Facebook have been vocal in their support for the retention of the rules. Democrats think the fight to restore the rules could be a political victor during November's congressional midterm elections even if the effort is unsuccessful, as it will force Republicans to record a vote against reinstating the rules. Ed Markey, D-Mass., the leader of the Senate effort. Earlier this month, Senator Shaheen held a Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee field hearing with New Hampshire small business owners about the effects of repealing net neutrality protections on Granite State small businesses.

Some say the decision could be largely symbolic, given that the majority of the American public support net neutrality and politicians are well aware how their stance on the issue might affect them when voters go to the polls for the midterms. Now, Net Neutrality activists have to collect signatures from a full majority of House members.
