Nanny who killed 2 children gets life in prison without parole

Ortega was facing life in prison without parole.

"The defendant might think that she destroyed the Lulu and Leo, but she's wrong".

"The defendant is an evil and utterly unsafe narcissist and a complete failure", Kevin Krim said. Because I want to talk about all our kids.

"It is so unfair that they are gone, unfair to us, unfair to the world", said Mr Krim.

Ortega spoke briefly during the hearing, but her words were enough to pain the victims' parents.

The only time Ortega showed any emotion was when she whimpered that she deserved mercy because now she was suddenly "sorry". At the time of the deaths, she was living in Manhattan with her son, her sister and her niece, police said.

On Monday, mother Marina Krim, who found her children mortally wounded in their bathtub, told a judge that Ortega tried to destroy the Krim family but failed and instead had destroyed her own family.

The 55-year-old Ortega is from the Dominican Republic.

He said they called Lulu "Our Little Buddha". "This defendant to this day has shown no remorse".

"It's the people of NY who wrapped their arms around us in our darkest moment - they are what make this the greatest city in the world", he said.

Jurors and members of the audience also wept up when Kevin and Marina - the first and last witnesses on the prosecution's direct case - took the witness stand.

The nanny's lawyer had argued that Ortega was mentally ill and couldn't be held responsible for the children's deaths.

Marina Krim had described on the stand walking through the family's darkened apartment, Nessie in tow, looking for her other two children the day of October 25, 2012.

"The other day I found myself on the corner of 76th [Street] and Columbus [Avenue], and I just stopped", he said, tears filling his eyes as he described looking into the lobby of the building where the murders took place. The two children had been stabbed multiple times with a kitchen knife, reports The New York Times. "It was real", Krim told jurors.

Prosecutors said Ortega was driven to kill because she was jealous of Ms Krim and resentful of the cleaning she had to do.

Mrs Krim had not originally meant to return to court after an intense six-hour testimony during the trial, however she returned in ordered to "finish a terrible chapter in my family's life". Krim frantically tried to reach Ortega, who had worked for the family for about two years.

The parents claim Ortega's relatives gave false and misleading information about her background as a nanny.
