Long weekend sleep may compensate for short weekday sleep

Researchers at Stockholm University and the Karolinska Institute - which is Sweden's most acclaimed medical university - have published a new study that links sleeping in on the weekend to living a regular lifespan.

There are few things in life more satisfying than crawling into bed on Friday night knowing you'll get a well-deserved lie-on in the morning.

Past studies really only looked at sleep patterns during the week, and recommended that people change their sleeping habits gradually over time.

Those involved with the data say when people who get less sleep during the week slept in on weekends, their mortality rate was the same as those who get seven-hours per night. The performance of sleep-deprived individuals was no different among those who reported feeling alert and those who said they felt exhausted.

But when the short sleepers slept in on the weekends, their mortality rate did not differ from that of the consistent seven-hour-a-night sleepers. What is your average amount of sleep per week?

People who only get less than five hours of sleep a night throughout the week, but then have a longer snooze on the weekends, had no heightened mortality risk. There is also no risk of early death.

The team pointed out that they only assessed individuals aged 65 or under, not bearing the sleeping habits and mortality rates of those older in mind.

Sleep is something you need to replenish regularly if you don't want to hurt your health. He thinks a lot of people may relate to sleeping less during the week and, at the very least, may want to have an excuse for sleeping in on our days off.
