Ivanka Trump serves up support for Serena Williams

Without being seeded, Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam victor who has won the French Open three times, could face highly-ranked opponents in the early rounds of the tournament. "But in my opinion it's good to protect the ranking when someone is giving birth".

She took to Twitter Thursday to express her discontent with the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), demanding the organization to change its rules regarding maternity leave.

Williams returned to the professional circuit in the United States six months after giving birth to her first child. She experienced an extremely hard childbirth, which left her bedridden for six weeks, and has had a halting return to action, playing in two tournaments in March before pulling back to focus on a comeback at Roland Garros.

The news comes after Williams told Vogue she suffered various health complications, including a pulmonary embolism, shortly after she gave birth to her daughter, Alexis Olympia. The WTA has said that it's open to offering protected seeding - rather than a special ranking - in the future, but that can not be implemented until next year at the earliest. WTA treats maternity requests similar to those of injuries or illnesses.

The WTA released a statement saying it would review its existing rules to extend protections to include a player's seed up to a certain level.

"The rule is now under further review as part of our 2019 rules process", the WTA statement said.

Fourth-ranked Elina Svitolina, who retained her Italian Open title on Sunday, was also supportive of seeding Williams.

"So I think there's a number of different areas like child care, like some type of financial payment if they are out of the game for a period of time and the protection in regards to that". "She was No. 1, so she deserves seeding".

Before this year, Larsson had not won a main draw match in this tournament, losing her four other clashes here. "She was my idol since I was growing up".

And apparently a part in Being Serena where she groggily jokes about having another baby while they're on the way home from the hospital wasn't a hallucination sequence.
