Israel calls on Syria's Assad to 'get rid' of Iranian forces

These airstrikes had little to do with the Syrian war - they targeted Hezbollah convoys and depots of Iranian-supplied weapons that Israeli intelligence believe were destined for the Shia movement's arsenal in Lebanon.

Syrian air defenses were also struck after they fired on Israeli jets, he acknowledged. It said none of its warplanes was hit. "The Israeli claim was made to portray its attacks on Syria as an attempt to contain Iran, thus winning the approval of the U.S. and the Saudis", Moustapha explained.

"The Israelis have chosen this moment to strike as they know Iran can not respond militarily if it insists on saving an accord, which for it, is very important both in economic and political terms", said Abidi.

Speaking while touring the Israeli side of the occupied Golan Heights, Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said Israel is not looking for friction.

"But I can say that in terms of our objective, we focussed less on personnel and more on capabilities and hardware.to inflict long-term damage on the Iranian military establishment in Syria".

A prominent Iranian cleric on Friday threatened two Israeli cities with destruction if the Jewish state "acts foolishly" and attacks its interests again, while thousands of protesters demonstrated against President Donald Trump's withdrawal from the Iranian nuclear deal with world powers.

An official with the Iran-led regional alliance supporting Syrian President Bashar Assad said the strike targeted a Syrian army position but killed a Syrian man and his wife who happened to be passing by in their auto.

The military directive Tuesday came "following the identification of irregular activity of Iranian forces in Syria". Syrian TV earlier reported large explosions in the area. Russian Federation is the major power broker in Syria, where its military intervention turned the tide in favor of government forces, and Israel coordinates military action there with Moscow.

According to the BBC, "These are the first skirmishes in a potential war between Israel and Iran that promises a fearful level of destruction - even by the standards of the modern Middle East". In addition, Israel launched more than 10 surface-to-surface tactical missiles on Syria, it said.

Israel and Iran have appeared to be on a collision course for months.

The White House has condemned Iranian rocket attacks on the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights as an "unacceptable and highly unsafe development for the entire Middle East". Pro-Syrian media said Syrian missiles then fired at Israeli forces.

In Iran's first official reaction to the attack, a Friday report in state-run IRNA quoted Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi as saying the Israeli attack on Syria under "fabricated and baseless excuses" is a breach of the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria. After an uneventful night, the military on Wednesday called on residents to return to "full civilian routine", meaning studies and excursions would continue as usual, although the shelters would remain open.
