HTC Officially Announces Exodus, the World's First Blockchain-Powered Smartphone

HTC Officially Announces Exodus, the World's First Blockchain-Powered Smartphone

Overseeing the project is Phil Chen, best known as the founder of HTC's Vive virtual reality headset business.

Unveiled on Tuesday, the HTC Exodus is instead the first phone by a major brand that's dedicated to blockchain encryption, the security technology that forms the base of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. From a vague outline, the rear of the phone looks similar to most HTC phones today. True, the awareness and interest surrounding blockchain-powered cryptocurrency has increased considerably in recent times but it is hard to imagine how that would make Exodus a much sought after device.

The device, dubbed Exodus, will feature baked-in support for decentralized applications (DApp) and cryptocurrencies.

The HTC Exodus exists separately from HTC's main phone business, and it is not the same phone planned for HTC's May 23 announcement. With the current crypto-craze, the phones may sell well, regardless if they offer actual functionality beyond what users can get on their devices right now. Chen, who now holds the title of "chief decentralized officer", will head all of the firm's cryptocurrency and blockchain-related initiatives. The company foresees the phone as a "hub" or node for Bitcoin and Ethereum, with plans to support "the entire blockchain ecosystem".

HTC's yet to announce pricing for its Exodus phone, but when it does go on sale, customers will be able to purchase it using, you guessed it, cryptocurrency.

HTC's Exodus might be the world's second blockchain-powered phone.

According to The Next Web, HTC may even accept cryptocurrency as payment for the phone, whenever it exists. Blockchain and cryptocurrency are becoming big topics these days, with many anxious that the traditional currencies might be worthless in a few years.
