Guillermo del Toro and Netflix team up on new horror series

Guillermo del Toro is developing Netflix's first horror anthology series.

The streaming giant has handed out a straight-to-series order for Guillermo del Toro's 10 After Midnight, an individual episodic horror anthology from the Oscar victor behind The Shape of Water. Del Toro will also handpick a team of genre writers and filmmakers to bring the stories to life.

In the meantime: ya think del Toro will do a Lovecraftian episode?

Guillermo will serve as executive producer on the series as well as a writer and director on select episodes.

The series will be Guillermo's first live-action show on the streaming service and will be Netflix's first horror anthology series. Netflix has another anthology series called Black Mirror, but it's not horror in the typical sense. The streaming platform has not yet announced the release date of the show, but reports that the premiere will take place soon. Del Toro, alongside J. Miles Dale (The Shape of Water) and Gary Ungar (The Strain) of Exile Entertainment, will executive produce. Del Toro is a longstanding fan of the original books, particularly Stephen Gammell's notorious illustrations, which he cites as being 'scary as fuck'. His most recent film won four awards at this year's Oscars, including Best Production Design, Best Original Score, Best Director, and Best Picture, which is the top prize.

However, it's now unclear where Netflix will shoot 10 After Midnight.

His previous films alternate between Spanish-language dark fantasy pieces, such as The Devil's Backbone (2001), and triple Oscar victor Pan's Labyrinth (2006), and American studio movies such as the vampire superhero action pic Blade II (2002), the supernatural adventures Hellboy (2004) and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) and the sci-fi monsters-versus-robots film Pacific Rim (2013). He created the FX series The Strain, which wrapped up previous year after running for four seasons.

It's worth noting that del Toro has a home in Toronto and frequently works on films there. As always, if you have anything to share, feel free to sound them off in the comments section below!
