Former Aston Villa star Jlloyd Samuel dies in vehicle crash

"We are deeply saddened to hear of the death of our former player Jlloyd Samuel at the age of just 37 in a vehicle accident", said Villa. The former Premier League defender has died at the age of just 37.

The news has been confirmed by a statement from the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association.

He played youth football for Charlton before joining Aston Villa, where he made 199 appearances between 1999 and 2007.

An England youth worldwide, he switched allegiance to Trinidad, where he was born, in a bid to play at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, but FIFA rejected his application.

Former Aston Villa and Bolton defender Jlloyd Samuel has died in a vehicle crash.

"The Trinidad and Tobago Football Association and his former national teammates at this time extend deepest condolences to his family members both in the United Kingdom and here in Trinidad and Tobago".

Samuel was born in the city of San Fernando in the south-west of Trinidad but moved to England as a youngster.

It is believed he was returning home after taking his children to school at High Legh when his Range Rover was in collision with a van.

Villa have announced they will wear black armbands on Tuesday night for the second leg of their Championship play-off semi-final against Middlesbrough.

The driver of the van, a 54-year-old man, has also sustained serious injuries and is now being treated in hospital.

Samuel did not get clearance in time to join the Soca Warriors in Germany and it was another three years before he made his first senior worldwide cap in red, white and black strip. He ended his professional career in Iran where he played for four seasons with Esteghlal and Paykan. Such a good guy on and off the pitch and a truly good friend.

Former Villa player and radio pundit Stan Collymore said: "Devastating news about J Lloyd Samuel".

Rest in peace, Jlloyd.

"I know our club will honour him tonight and remainder of the season".
