First Named Storm of Hurricane Season to Drench US Gulf Coast

The Florida Keys and Florida peninsula could receive 10 inches of rain in some areas.

Florida Governor Rick Scott, who issued a state of emergency on Saturday across the the region, said on Sunday that the National Guard has 5,500 members ready to be deployed.

Subtropical storm Alberto, the first named storm of the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season, is bringing heavy rain Monday to the U.S. Gulf Coast as well as western Cuba.

If that forecast holds, it would make for a near-normal or above-normal season.

Gusty showers began lashing parts of Florida on Sunday, and authorities were warning of the possibility of flash flooding. Alberto's maximum sustained winds are now 65 miles per hour (100 kph) with higher gusts and the minimum central pressure reads 991 MB or 29.27 inches.

The NHC registered winds of about 40 mph extending outward up to 105 miles from the center of the storm. "This is definitely a risky storm", said David Roth, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland.

And a storm surge watch was in effect from the Suwannee to Navarre near Pensacola.

Kennedy said it will be mainly dry Monday morning with more typical afternoon showers and thunderstorms developing.

The storm is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 10 to 15 inches with isolated totals of 25 inches across the western Cuba.

The major tourist communities of Destin and Panama City Beach are within the watch area.

Please be prepared for possible areas of flooding and loss of electricity.

Gulf Coast residents should "take this storm seriously", the National Weather Service said on Sunday as Subtropical Storm Alberto drove north through the Gulf of Mexico, threatening heavy rains and winds to the southern coastal states. Knabb advised staying off the roads during the storm and avoiding water covered roads completely. Grant Brown, the city's public information officer, said they had already finished a number of preparations such as clearing culverts to prepare for big rains but Sunday had turned into a "really nice day". Timing so far seems to be around 12-1PM Monday.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for Wake, Chatham, Nash and Johnston counties and points south through 8 a.m. Tuesday. Just because it's "nice and sunny" after the storm passes, Medlin says there's still a risk for swimmers. "That means that people are not allowed to go in the water, there could be legal consequences if they go in the water because there are very risky surf conditions so we do that for their safety as well as the safety of responders".
