Apple Hit with Class Action Suit over MacBook Keyboard Failures

In the never-ending race to make the slimmest and lightest laptops, Apple, alongside other manufacturers, has been trimming the fat on its notebooks for years.

Now it looks like the keyboard debacle has been taken one step further because according to AppleInsider, a class action lawsuit has been filed in which it claims that Apple knew about the defects in their keyboards but still chose to ship them out anyway. The case alleges that "thousands" of owners of these devices have faced issues because of the design. On most occasions, the lawsuit went on to say "minimal amount of dust and debris" was enough for keyboard failure. The butterfly mechanism switches later made their way into Apple's professional laptop range with the redesigned MacBook Pro in 2016 with a second-generation design. This leads to unregistered keystrokes making the machine useless. There were certain users whose laptops were out of warranty and it cost them dearly. The keyboards don't look different from the previous ones but it's the mechanism underneath that has changed.

Barbaro and Rao assert that Apple must have known the keyboards were "defective" by the time they reached the public, since complaints started mounting soon after the original 12-inch MacBook launched in 2015. The company even stated that it is 'four times more stable'. "Complaints of keyboard failures began to come in shortly after the 2015 MacBook was launched".

However, Apple seems to be aware of the issue and seems to have acknowledged the problem. A support document issued to some of the authorized service providers talks about a method of cleaning the keyboard with a can of compressed air.

The suits assert major breaches by Apple which include, breach of express warranty, breach of the covenant of good faith, breach of the implied warranty, violation of the Magnuson-Moss and Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Acts, violation of the California Unfair Competition Law, violation of California's Consumer Legal Remedies Act and fraudulent concealment.

Affected users now seek damages, legal fees and demands that Apple not only publicly acknowledge the keyboard design flaw, but be ready to fix or replace defective units with reimbursements for those who have had to purchase replacement laptop units.
