US Department of Justice probing Huawei for possible Iran sanctions violations

US Department of Justice probing Huawei for possible Iran sanctions violations

The Department of Justice (DOJ) is investigating Chinese phone-maker Huawei over whether it violated US sanctions against Iran, The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday.

It is uncertain as to how far the DoJ probe has advanced to and what allegations the federal agents are exploring, the Journal said, citing people familiar with the matter.

Earlier this month, the Commerce Department banned ZTE, China's second-biggest network equipment maker, from buying USA -made components as punishment for violating a sanctions settlement over transactions with Iran and North Korea.

The ZTE ban was the result of its failure to comply with an agreement with the U.S. Commerce Department reached previous year after it pleaded guilty in federal court to conspiring to violate U.S. sanctions by illegally shipping U.S. goods and technology to Iran.

Glenn Schloss, a spokesman for Huawei in Shenzhen, declined to comment about the probes.

Internal ZTE documents posted on the Commerce Department website cited a rival, referred to only as "F7", as also violating USA export controls in sales of equipment to Iran.

In a 2016 letter to the Commerce Department, 10 US lawmakers said they believed F7 to be Huawei, citing media reports. But the Justice Department's criminal inquiry suggests more serious misconduct - and consequently more serious repercussions.

Recently, FCC said it would like to block some telecom equipment companies from selling equipments to government projects.

In April 2017, lawmakers sent another letter to Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross asking for F7 to be publicly identified and fully investigated.

A congressional report last week branded Huawei and ZTE as being among "nefarious actors" in China infiltrating American intelligence bodies and critical infrastructure systems through information technology systems and components. Both companies have in the past been accused of spying for the Chinese government, but in recent times ZTE has been hit with a USA export ban which prevents them from buying U.S. technology. The measure has yet to be finalized. The US administration never wanted China to rule the wireless space and pose threats to Americans. "U.S. authorities should not base government decisions on speculation or rumor".
