United Kingdom jets fire at Syrian base in 'limited and targeted' strike

British Prime Minister Theresa May said on Saturday that it was right and legal to order cruise missile strikes against Syria after a chemical attack on civilians in the town of Douma.

She said that at an emergency cabinet meeting in London on Thursday "we agreed that it was both right and legal to take military action" after hearing legal advice.

"We are confident in our own assessment that the Syrian regime was highly likely responsible for this attack and that its persistent pattern of behaviour meant that it was highly likely to continue using chemical weapons", she will add.

"It is about a limited and targeted strike that does not further escalate tensions in the region and that does everything possible to prevent civilian casualties", she said.

Donald Trump has announced that a coalition of America, Britain and France have begun airstrikes against the Syrian regime to punish its chemical attack that killed more than 70 people.

Mr Trump said the Syrian regime's use of chemical weapons on Douma was a "significant escalation in a pattern of chemical weapons use by that very awful regime".

British jets fired missiles at a Syrian military base suspected of holding chemical weapons ingredients on Saturday in Britain's first military action against President Bashar al-Assad's regime.

"There is a wider question on the future political solution for Syria and that is a matter that we will continue to pursue in diplomatic and political channels with our global partners and allies", May said.

She added that she would address parliament on Monday.

"This collective action sends a clear message that the worldwide community will not stand by and tolerate the use of chemical weapons", May told a press conference.

Mr Corbyn will also call for a War Powers Act which would oblige prime ministers to consult Parliament in the future before committing forces into the field of action.

French President Emmanuel Macron said the strikes had been limited so far to Syria's chemical weapons facilities. Britain has accused Russia of being behind last month's nerve agent attack on former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury, southern England, a charge Moscow has rejected.

Williamson told BBC radio that all British crews returned safely and early indications were that the strikes had been "highly successful".

British lawmakers voted down taking military action against Damascus in 2013, in what was widely viewed as an assertion of parliamentary sovereignty on the use of force. These are not the actions of a man, they are crimes of a monster instead.

Other opposition leaders joined in the criticism.

Vince Cable, leader of the Liberal Democrats, said: "Riding the coattails of an erratic USA president is no substitute for a mandate from the House of Commons".
