UK's Johnson Backs Government's Decision to Strike Syria With No Parl't Approval

The British planes launched eight missiles at a chemical weapons storage facility, which the Ministry of Defence said was "some distance from any known concentrations of civilian habitation".

"But it was the world saying that we've had enough of the use of chemical weapons".

"It is very important to stress it is not an attempt to change the tide of the war in Syria or to have a regime change", Johnson told reporters on arrival to a meeting of European Union foreign ministers in Luxembourg.

"I'm afraid the Syrian war, in many ways, will go on in its frightful, miserable way - but it was the world saying, we've had enough of the use of chemical weapons".

Prime Minister Theresa May is expected to face a backlash on Monday when she addresses Parliament, which will be followed by an emergency debate, with some MPs angry the government joined the US-led mission without first seeking their approval.

Last Saturday, the United States, France, and the United Kingdom launched strikes on a number of targets in Syria in response to an alleged chemical attack in the Damascus suburb of Douma.

The foreign secretary made the comments to the BBC's Andrew Marr show on Sunday after reports suggested that Russian Federation could launch cyber attacks on infrastructure in the UK in response to the air strikes carried out by UK, US and French forces against the Moscow-backed Syrian regime.

They will add: "The Council is supportive of all efforts aimed at the prevention of the use of chemical weapons".

"If and when such a thing were to happen then clearly, with allies, we would study what the options were", he said.

Lithuania's foreign minister, Linas Antanas Linkevicius, said today: "Not everyone is capable to take part in the air strikes, but it's important to support [them]".

Mrs May was to tell Parliament, "We have acted because it is in our national interest to do so".

"We are confident in our own assessment that the Syrian regime was highly likely responsible for this attack and that its persistent pattern of behaviour meant that it was highly likely to continue using chemical weapons".

Britain sought "to alleviate further humanitarian suffering caused by chemical weapons".
