U.S. to hit Russian Federation with sanctions for aiding Assad

A joint United Nations-OPCW mission concluded that troops under Syrian President Bashar Assad had used chemical weapons several times in recent years, including in a sarin attack a year ago in the town of Khan Sheikhoun that killed almost 100 people.

U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley announced on Sunday that the USA will imminently impose a new rounds of sanctions on Russian Federation. "[Treasury Secretary Steven] Mnuchin will be announcing those on Monday if he hasn't already and they will go directly to any sort of companies that were dealing with equipment related to Assad and chemical weapons use".

"I think everyone is going to feel it at this point", she added.

Referring to the airstrikes, Haley said: "I think everyone knows that we sent a strong message".

"Russia has never supplied any dual-use technologies, these USA statements are another fake and deception", Serebrennikov said.

"Fears of a direct military conflict between the US and Russian Federation have been sidelined, allowing markets to breathe easier, but only somewhat", BCS analysts said in a note.

A day after the U.S., Britain and France bombarded sites they said were linked to a chemical weapons program, Syrian President Bashar Assad appeared briefly on state TV, seemingly unfazed by the military action - and even reportedly in high spirits.

Oil prices fell, however, as geopolitical tensions were somewhat eased by signs that there would be no significant retaliation in response to a US-led air strike on Syria over the weekend.

Nikki Haley, the US Ambassador to the United Nations, indicated the sanctions would be aimed at sending a message to Russian Federation, which she said has blocked six attempts by the UN Security Council to make it easier to investigate the use of chemical weapons.

USA officials have accused Russian Federation of failing in its role as guarantor of a 2013 agreement to dismantle Syria's chemical-weapons stockpiles.

The comments came during a closed-door meeting at the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, convened after an April 7 attack in the town of Douma, outside the Syrian capital, in which dozens of people were allegedly killed with poison gas.

The war and politics of Syria are broadly going its way.

According to the administration source, on March 24, Trump's aides explained to him that the U.S. "would be ousting roughly the same number of Russians as its European allies part of a coordinated move to punish Moscow for the poisoning of a former Russian spy and his daughter on British soil", The Washington Post wrote.

French President Emmanuel Macron said Sunday that France wants to launch a diplomatic initiative over Syria that would include Western powers, Russian Federation and Turkey.

Senior members of the lower house of parliament have said they are considering legislation to give the Kremlin powers to ban or restrict a list of USA imports.

Russian military police had been deployed in Douma, raising complaints from the Syrian opposition that evidence of chemical weapons use might no longer be found. What happens next, she said, is up to Assad and to his Russian and Iranian allies.
