The Walking Dead stars and showrunner address season finale fate

Except when Rick et al got to that spot expecting to ambush Negan they heard his familiar whistle seemingly coming from all sides. Rick pursues him and eventually confronts Negan underneath a tree with two pieces of stained glass swinging from its branches - the same tree The Walking Dead has been showing glimpses of all season. That way they believed what the map said, and used that to lead them exactly where he wanted. He let Rick know that they were trapped and he had some of Rick's friends captive including Gabriel and Dwight. But their weapons backfired thanks to Eugene having tampered with the bullets. I know Negan got shot in the hand, but you're telling me he couldn't have taken out Dwight, whose freakin' hands were bound, with Lucille? At this point, Gabriel throws himself out of the auto, but Eugene and Negan find him in the woods and load him back up.

Kill of the week: Morgan's slice "n" dice Savior victim. They had a little shuffle and Negan got the upper hand for a while, just long enough to blame Rick again for Carl's death. And compared to Carl's untimely death midway through what's been a problematic season, the idea that the show would kill off a character many viewers are growing exhausted of, Negan's death made some attractive sense - but not for long.

After some more fighting, Rick asks Negan for 10 seconds to explain how there can be a better future.

Then Rick blinks, makes a big speech, and all the Saviors-who just literally tried to gun down everyone Rick's ever known only to be betrayed by Eugene's faulty ammunition-are suddenly free to go with the caveat that if they step out of line in the new world, they'll pay the price. Rick's idea to throw Negan into jail forever only gives him a change to recover and figure out how to escape justice in one way or another. Going by the name Al for short, this new survivor has a SWAT truck rigged with guns and plenty of supplies to survive the apocalypse. Negan's reign is over. Later, back at the Hilltop, she had a meeting with Jesus and Daryl, where they essentially formed an anti-Rick alliance. (So yes, Eugene is a good guy after all, but Rosita still punched him in the face for puking on her.) Rick's people charged and dispatched a bunch more Saviors with a minimum of fuss and the rest surrendered. The Saviors are happy to rebuild and find a new way to work with the other communities.

At the Hilltop, Alden tells Maggie that most of the prisoners are heading back to the Sanctuary to make something out of it.

Morgan went to see Jadis and invite her to go live with Rick, which she happily agreed to. "No, no, he killed Glenn!" she screamed, as Michonne held her back.

Maggie was seen talking to Jesus in her office at the Hilltop about what's next.

Dwight ends up leaving to go after Sherry, after being driven out by Daryl and being told never to come back. Viewing of "The Walking Dead" has already fallen off pretty dramatically, a byproduct of age, the overall gravity of a saturated TV marketplace and yes, missteps that the program has made along the way.

"When I read the script, I was a bit concerned when I slit his throat, because up until now, Jeffrey Dean Morgan has been wonderful, and one of the greatest assets he has brought to the show is the fact that at the end of each season, he does a three-page monologue". Not to mention, they develop much further than their fellow series' counterparts. Gaping neck wounds tend to be of the lethal variety, especially on The Walking Dead, but Rick had a second surprise in store: He ordered Siddiq to save Negan, who was still clinging to life.
